Byron Bay - sunrise to sunset
To warm up to our upcoming adventures, Lisa and I set off on a road-trip from Sydney north, north, north to Byron Bay.
Byron Bay is a great place.
A small town on the border of Queensland and NSW loaded to the teeth with tourist cash and buzzing like a hive. A place where surf culture rules supreme. Byron has Acai Bowl based cafes dotted all along a small network of central streets, a plentiful coastline to explore adorned with perfect rolling waves to ride, not to mention a throbbing late night vibe. Byron will keep your days full from sunrise until long after the sun sets.
Places to go:
- Byron Heads Lighthouse
Head up to the lighthouse for views of everywhere around Byron. Dolphins regularly cruise by the coast below you so keep an eye out. Then take in some epic rides by the hoardes of surfers on both sides of the head. A heated climb without a car, but well worth it either way.
- The Balcony
Head here on Wednesdays at 5-6pm for $1 oysters, and any other time day or night for a drink/eatery pit stop and prime people watching from its namesake balcony.
- The Treehouse
Damn good pizza served in a setting surrounded by lush greenery. This restaurant sits just outside of the centre of town but has an air of class to it (not so much as to make those attending in flip flops feel out of place).
- Miss Margaritas
Mexican food and margaritas in all forms and flavours. Right in the heart of it, this is a great place to start your night out.
- Cheeky Monkey
Head here late night for a little slice of insanity. Anyone up for a party funnels here as the night wears thin so the crowd gathers, and gets messy around 2am or later. If things aren't loud enough wherever you are, head to Cheeky Monkey.
